🎵 Monte do Gozo Concerts 2026: A Pilgrim's Guide to Santiago

Monte do Gozo - Open-air amphitheatre in Santiago de Compostela during a concert, with the stage lit up and the Cathedral towers in the background

I've written so much over the years aimed at pilgrims and visitors arriving in Santiago — trying not just to have another generic website but to create something useful for people coming to the city. I've covered festivals, routes, places to eat... and also events I've been to myself, where I can offer a more personal take. The idea is to go beyond the basic info you can find anywhere and give you a broader perspective. Hopefully, that helps you decide whether to plan your trip to Santiago around a specific date, or if you're a pilgrim, to time your arrival to coincide with these events.

Because some days, Santiago isn't just about the Cathedral and the Compostela certificate. Some days the city vibrates in a whole different way. And some of those days are thanks to the concerts held at Monte do Gozo. I've been several times, and honestly, they're days of very little sleep, meeting people from all over the world, and dancing — dancing until your legs beg for mercy.

I still remember the Jean-Michel Jarre concert. It was September 29, 1993, part of his Europe In Concert tour, and for me it was a real turning point. An audiovisual spectacle like I had never seen: lasers, lights, screens, a production that turned Monte do Gozo into something almost otherworldly. It's one of those events you never forget, because of the sheer scale of everything — the sound, the technology, the crowd... all on a level you'd never expect to find on a hill on the outskirts of Santiago.

📍 What is Monte do Gozo and why is it called that?

Monte do Gozo means "Mount of Joy" or "Mount of Gladness". And the name says it all.

This 370-metre hill, just 5 kilometres from Santiago Cathedral, is the first point where pilgrims catch sight of the Cathedral towers. You arrive on foot after hundreds of kilometres, climb the slope, and suddenly there they are. It's a moment that hits you right in the chest.

But Monte do Gozo is much more than that. Here you'll find the largest public pilgrim hostel on the entire Camino de Santiago, with capacity for hundreds of pilgrims. If you're coming on the French Way, this is your last stop before the Cathedral. And even if you're not walking, anyone in Santiago can easily get here: there's a city bus, taxi, or if you feel like a walk, you can walk it in no time. It's about 4.5 km from the Cathedral, uphill, but perfectly doable.

For those of us who live here, Monte do Gozo is a go‑to spot. Heading up for the day, sitting in one of its massive grassy areas, kicking a football around, strolling, enjoying a cold beer on a hot day, and taking advantage of the pool if it's open for a refreshing dip before lying down in the shade of one of the hundreds of trees. It's one of those places where you forget you're five minutes from a city centre.

As for the concert area, the open-air amphitheatre is shaped like a hemicycle — like a Roman theatre but supersized — with the stage at the bottom and the audience spread across a huge grassy slope. It holds about 40,000 people and is flanked by groves of trees that give it a magical atmosphere when night falls and the concert lights start illuminating everything.

It has plenty of history. In the Middle Ages, Archbishop Diego Gelmírez had a chapel built here in 1105. Pilgrims would kneel to give thanks. Some, like King Alfonso XI, would dismount from their horses and walk the final kilometres barefoot. The chapel was abandoned in the 17th century, but the symbolism of the hill never faded. In fact, Monte do Gozo is mentioned in the Codex Calixtinus (12th century) as "Mons Gaudii". French pilgrims called it "Mont Joie".

In more recent times, in 1989, the hill saw its largest crowd ever with the visit of Pope John Paul II for World Youth Day. Major works were carried out, leaving us the amphitheatre we know today. Since then, artists like the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have performed here. And since 2018, the O Son do Camiño festival has turned the hill into an international music landmark.

🎯 Why time your arrival with a concert?

Let me give you three solid reasons, pilgrim to pilgrim:

  1. The complete experience: You've walked towards Santiago. Monte do Gozo is your last milestone before the finish line. What better way to celebrate than with live music at the very spot where pilgrims have been moved for centuries?
  2. You'll meet hundreds of fellow pilgrims: The Monte do Gozo concerts are full of people like you: pilgrims from every country who have walked the Camino. I've seen groups of strangers become lifelong friends on the festival floor.
  3. World-class artists 5 km from the Cathedral: In 2026 you've got Katy Perry, Linkin Park, Maroon 5 and Martin Garrix. You don't get to see artists like these in such a special setting every day.
My recommendation: plan your last stage to arrive at Monte do Gozo on the day the festival starts. Drop your backpack at the hostel, shower, and head down to the amphitheatre. The next day, collect your Compostela certificate at the Cathedral. That way, in two days you experience the best of the Camino and the best of Santiago.

🎵 What if I don't have a ticket? No worries — lots of people come to Monte do Gozo without a ticket and the atmosphere is still a party. You won't see the artists directly, but you'll hear the music, dance, chat and enjoy the moment. And if you're a pilgrim staying at the hostel right there, planning to get up early to head to the Cathedral... you probably won't sleep much those nights, but I promise it'll be worth it.

🚶 How to get to Monte do Gozo from the Camino

Monte do Gozo is on the French Way (Camino Francés), 4.5 km from the Cathedral. Whether you're coming from Sarria or from Tui, here are your options:

🥾 If you're walking (French Way)

The French Way passes right by Monte do Gozo. It's the last stop before descending into Santiago. When you reach the hill, you'll see the hostel complex and the amphitheatre on your left. You can't miss it.

🥾 If you're coming from Tui (Portuguese Way)

The Portuguese Way enters Santiago from the south, through the Pontevedra and Padrón area. To get to Monte do Gozo from the centre you can:

  • Walk up (45 min from the Cathedral, about 4 km uphill)
  • Take a city bus from Praza de Galicia
  • Catch a taxi (10-15 min, about €8-10)

🚌 Special concert transport to Monte do Gozo

On concert days there is usually a special bus service from central Santiago to Monte do Gozo. Ask at the Pilgrim's Office or check the festival websites. Taxis and ride-sharing (Uber, Cabify) are also available.

If you're driving from other parts of Galicia or Spain, Monte do Gozo has plenty of parking spaces, but with events of this size they fill up fast. Local residents turn their adjacent plots into parking and make some extra cash, so you'll find somewhere — though maybe not on the first try. That said, my advice is to use public transport if you can. Save yourself the headaches, traffic jams and searching, and you can enjoy a drink without worrying about the drive back.

🚕 Not sure how to get there? Susana's husband, Alejandro — like Alexander the Great, but without the empire — is a taxi driver. If you need a ride to Monte do Gozo or someone to pick you up, call him directly at 685 13 63 43.
If you're walking, here's my advice: arrive at Monte do Gozo, drop your backpack at the hostel (it has capacity for hundreds, plus a restaurant, cafeteria and shop), shower, and then decide whether to head to the concert or rest. The hostel is 2 minutes from the amphitheatre.

💡 Tips for pilgrims at Monte do Gozo concerts

Based on my own experience and chats at the bar with customers who've attended these events in previous years, here are some things to keep in mind for getting the most out of these days.

Book accommodation in advance. On concert weekends, Santiago fills up and finding a place gets tricky. If you don't get a spot at the Monte do Gozo hostel, don't rule out looking in nearby towns like San Marcos, Milladoiro or even cities like A Coruña or Pontevedra, and commute by public transport. The bus and train network works well and in just over half an hour you're in Santiago.
Wear comfortable shoes for the concert. Yes, you've been walking all day. But at the concert you'll be standing for hours. A lightweight spare pair of trainers will save your feet.
Sunscreen and water. The amphitheatre is outdoors. In June-July the sun is strong until 9:00 PM. Bring a hat, sunscreen and a reusable water bottle.
Watch your belongings. Bring only the essentials: cash, phone and ID. Leave the rest where you're staying or in lockers (though there aren't many in Santiago). Like at most big events, unfortunately there are pickpockets around. Don't make it easy for anyone.
Enjoy the moment. Get ready to dance, sing, laugh and chat with people from all over the world. That's what makes these days so special.

🍽️ What to do about food during concert days

During concert days, food is a big deal. Between dancing, the sun and hours on your feet, your body needs refuelling.

Plenty of stalls and tents are set up at Monte do Gozo itself, and honestly, the advantage is you get freshly cooked food on the spot. Prices tend to be high, but that's what comes with an event of this scale.

On the occasions I went with a group, we opted to buy from the supermarket and load our backpacks with bread and cured meats to make sandwiches. We'd sit in a grassy area and enjoy. Drinks — since it's so hot those days — are best bought there or brought in a cool bag, though carrying one around all day is a bit of a hassle.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How much do O Son do Camiño tickets cost?

General passes usually cost between €120–150 (three days) and day tickets between €50–70 each. That gets you into the amphitheatre to see the artists live. But here's the thing: the Monte do Gozo venue is open, and without a ticket you can access the common areas, hear the music, feel the atmosphere and enjoy the festival from outside the amphitheatre. You won't see the artists, but the music carries and the vibe is just as real.

How much do O Gozo Festival tickets cost?

General admission from €45 (Pista Promo 1), Front Stage €90 and VIP from €245 at official outlets: LiveNation.es, Ticketmaster, El Corte Inglés and Ataquilla. As with O Son do Camiño, the ticket is for the amphitheatre. The outdoor area is free to access, so you can always come by, hear the music and enjoy the atmosphere without paying.

Is there a hostel at Monte do Gozo?

Yes, the Monte do Gozo Hostel is a public hostel run by the Xunta de Galicia (the regional government) with about 500 beds (expandable to 800 in Holy Years), spread across 3 blocks with 8-bed dorms. It is exclusively for pilgrims with a Credencial (the pilgrim passport you stamp along the way) and places are given on a first-come-first-served basis, no reservation. Open from 1:00 PM to 10:00 PM and costs €10 (includes disposable sheets). It has a restaurant, cafeteria, laundry and shop on site. It's the most convenient option if you're going to the concert, but keep in mind it fills up fast on festival days.

Can I go to the concert if I only speak English / French / German?

Absolutely! O Son do Camiño and O Gozo Festival are international events. Music doesn't need translation. Plus, you'll meet pilgrims from all over the world.

Do I need to book the Monte do Gozo hostel for concert days?

You can't book it. The public hostel is only for pilgrims with a Credencial and operates on a first-come-first-served basis (opens 1:00 PM to 10:00 PM). On festival days it fills up fast, so try to arrive early. If you miss out, there are other options in San Marcos, Milladoiro or nearby towns with good bus connections.

Yes, the hostel and venue are accessible, with ramps and adapted spaces. The amphitheatre has a grassy slope that might be more challenging, but overall the complex is prepared. If you have specific access requirements, call the hostel beforehand to confirm.

Is there free camping?

No. The Ciudad de Vacaciones Monte do Gozo campsite is temporarily closed and wild camping is not allowed on site. Your best bet is the hostel or accommodation in Santiago and nearby towns.

Can I bring children?

Yes, there's a playground, grassy areas and a pool in season. For the concerts, minors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult and everyone needs their own ticket.

Is there an ATM at Monte do Gozo?

Yes, there's an ABanca ATM on site, available 24 hours. You can also pay by card at most services in the complex.

Is there WiFi or mobile coverage?

Yes, free WiFi is available in the hostel common areas and the central square. Mobile coverage works well throughout the area.

Is it worth going if I don't know the artists?

Absolutely. The atmosphere at Monte do Gozo on concert days is unique. Pilgrims from all over the world, live music, the Cathedral towers in the background... worth it even if you don't recognise a single name on the bill.
